Help A Hoosier — And Obama

This week’s blog will be short, because I have a long blog in mind and I want compensatory credit.

Last week, I suggested — since we’re all friends now — that we all hug an elephant in the interests of national reconciliation. This week, there is a special elephant to hug for the benefit of Barack Obama. That’s right. His name is Senator Dick Lugar.

If any of you out there have influence with Obama, contact him IMMEDIATELY and urge him to convince Lugar to be his Secretary of State. Yes, Lugar has said he is not interested, but if enough people pushed, he would accept. It would be the capstone of a distinguished career. ALL of us would benefit by having a superb person in that role, but it is EXACTLY what Obama needs to PROVE he really is going to be non-partisan in choosing the best people for the country.

Obama has gone out of his way to praise Lugar, he has traveled abroad with him, and he has co-sponsored nuclear-reduction legislation with him. Also, Lugar and Joe Biden have worked in concert on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He would be a “natural” in that post — and remove any of the questions about the new President’s grasp of foreign policy.

Hurry! Call, e-mail or write your friends at the Transition Office now. Dick Lugar, our favorite Hoosier elephant for Secretary of State!
