Paradise Lost
Well, here we go again, and this time around I was prepared to give you the Final Solution.
But it didn’t work out. All I can say is that it has followed the path of all of my Supreme Efforts and ended up in the usual Lost Cause. So I’m borrowing a phrase (without permission) from John Milton’s epic signifying Lost Opportunity. Maybe you remember (and if you don’t I’ll remind you) that last February in this space I offered the first Final Solution to the Hillary/Obama bloodletting by predicting that if they didn’t reach an accommodation, they’d end up saying bad things about each other. That part proved right. The next part was a quixotic suggestion that when Obama proved he was for-real, he should defer to Hillary in the interests of party harmony and agree to be her vice-president candidate. After all, he’s much younger and if they were elected, he could bide his time as the President-in-Waiting. Not QUITE as crazy as it sounds. Lyndon Johnson did it. So did George H.W. Bush. Al Gore almost did it. (Dick Chaney isn’t trying it, because even HE knows it wouldn’t work.) In this case, the deference wouldn’t work unless it came from Obama, because his constituents would never accept it from Hillary. From Obama, it would be true chivalry. But chivalry is a word unknown to politicians.
How about an Obama-Hillary ticket, with Madame Clinton as the V.P.? No way. She was vice president for eight years and won’t do that again. Some might say she was Co-President, at least until Monica tried to push her out. The way things are going it looks like Obama Is The Man. The woman will have to be gracious, if not chivalrous, and return to the Senate, where she will have real power. Meanwhile, she will SAY she supports the boy Barack wholeheartedly. Oh yeah!
So, no Final Solution at this time. The only thing left is advice on “How To Save The Democrat Party,” a role with which I am unfamiliar. Obviously, that is beyond my poor powers, because the Democrats have raised to new heights their well-known propensity to always end up fighting with each other. The worst of it will be papered over. John McCain will go after Hillary’s female fanatics, her Latino friends, and her blue-collar white men.
And who will be Obama’s running mate? Not another Senator; we’re already over-quota on those. He’ll need a governor-type, probably somebody from the South or West, like Bill Richardson. Or even Evan Bayh who, if memory serves, was once a governor. Yes, he was staunchly loyal to Hillary. But now he can be loyal to Obama. Why not?
