Running Pell-Mell In The Home Stretch
Last week I tried to remind my gentle readers (both of them) that Spring Is Here! But it’s no use. Let’s face it — the only thing to talk about in Indiana for the next ten days is POLITICS.
Ah yes, but what’s to say that hasn’t been said a zillion times by now? The more high-minded opinion leaders are calling for the candidates to stop bashing each other and discuss the “Issues.” Let me tell you something — from a registered cynic’s experience — the people don’t want to talk about “Issues.” Firstly, they want to hear their favorite candidate bash the other one, and secondly, they want both candidates to tell them only what they want to hear, not what they should hear. Meanwhile, the hired guns working for each side, aided and abetted by political columnists, keep circling the ring where the gladiators are always smiling while they conjure cutting remarks about the other’s inferiorities, waiting for them to say ONE WORD they can use to cripple the other guy. Nobody wants “Issues.” Everybody wants to know who’s winning.
How’s all that for cynicism?
Back to reality — or at least respectable discussion.
Since I don’t seem to be in a high-minded mood right now, I’ll revert to “I told you so.” Like last February 17 in a column here, I wrote that the Democrats’ “Super Delegates” would turn out to be the “Balance of Power,” because they will constitute about 20% of the votes, and neither Hillary or Obama can win enough votes for the nomination without them. Moreover, I said that “the two candidates both agree too much,” so in the final go-round, “the only thing left for them is to call each other names.” Have you noticed that lately? And as a result: “Pretty soon the Party will be blown apart. In the bloodletting that is soon to follow, we will learn that desperate political factions do not seek the good of the party or the country, only ways to bludgeon the opponent and win at any cost.” Anybody want to deny that is what’s happening?
Is all lost? Oh no, there is a solution. But it will have to wait until next week since this diatribe has gone on log enough. Come back next week.
